Which Liquid Flea Medicine Should You Buy?

Choosing your pet’s flea treatment can be a tough decision.  There are countless types of product offering different benefits.  Here is our round-up of the best choices for the average dog.

  • Advantage Flea Control is one of the new breed of insecticide free products.  These are extremely safe and extremely quick at destroying fleas and multiple stages of their life-cycle.  If your dog has a flea allergy or is unwell fleas need to be destroyed quickly and thoroughly and nothing will do it as fast as Advantage flea drops.
  • Frontline Plus for Dogs and Cats is similar to Advantage.  It is one of the newer products that proves extremely effective but safe to use.  In addition to dealing with fleas, Frontline Plus destroys ticks too and so is a far better option if you live in an area where ticks pose a threat.
  • Frontline Top Spot is a slightly milder product than Frontline Plus.  It will deal with ticks but does not tackle immature fleas and so is only really useful in homes that have few pets going in and out.
  • Advantage Multi is simple Advantage with an additional ingredient that will destroy heartworm larvae.  If you would like to combine heartworm prevention and flea control it is reliable and cost effective.
  • Revolution is another liquid product that combines flea control with heartworm medicine that could prove useful.

There are numerous cheap topical flea treatments but I would suggest you check with your vet first about how effective they are and how safe they are too.  Generally most owners need a product that guarantees to kill virtually all fleas quickly to prevent dermatitis or allergies.  Some milder products may be effective enough in the winter months or in regions with very low instances of fleas, but in general either Frontline Plus or Advantage are to be preferred simply because they are so effective and yet mild enough that they are well tolerated by the majority of pets.
