Art deco, the name is familiar to most as a design style, but opinions are all over the place regarding what exactly constitutes this style. While the interior designers and architects spend their time arguing over the specifics, the rest of us can get busy transferring this look into a bathroom revamping project. In a small bath, the retro shower curtain will be an important part of the theme.
Art deco was a reaction to the fancy frilly things so popular in the Victorian era. Deco meant getting rid of the frou frou and going with clean lines and barely any excessive ornamentation on furniture, walls and accessories. Out with the porcelain washstand sink and the tub on clawed feet, replace these with more geometric shapes in black or ivory.
This design can work very well for a homeowner who is stuck with some less than attractive fixtures of a particular time period. Say for example the high gloss black sinks or tubs that were beloved by many in the 1980’s. While first glance says chunky shiny monstrosity, when viewed in the art deco mode, they can easily be enhanced with a geometric print curtain in the favorite colors of that period, ivory and black.
Pyramid designs were all the rage in the art deco period. Bright contrast colors like red and green were popular in these triangles. There are a number of bathroom accessories like wastebaskets, tissue and cup holders and soap dishes that can be found in triangular shapes and picked up inexpensively online.
Taking the deco theme to the extreme, why not look for a retro shower curtain in an Egyptian motif? Believe it or not, it is possible to find these with sphinx, pyramid or even Cleopatra prints. If that is a bit too over the top, look for bold repetitive geometric patterns in a curtain in either the muted ebony-ivory tones or as a stunning slash of color.
