There are always developments being made in any industry in which the demand is increasing and the competition is fierce. This is certainly the case in the synthetic grass industry with many different aspects of the grass having the potential to be improved in a number of different ways. The synthetic grass has a number of important requirements that it has to meet if it is going to compete with its competitors.
- It must continue to look more and more like the natural grass it is imitating.
- It has to have as little negative impact on the environment into which it is introduced.
- It has to be safe for those who will be using it.
It seems that rather than making the artificial grass a single color the grass fibers are now being manufactured and woven together in groups of different colors. The uniform green grass of a synthetic grass lawn always stood out as obviously fake and the fact that it was too perfect has been a criticism against using it. By creating the grass in these subtle variations of color the grass looks more natural and less like a carpet.
The environmental concerns are valid and they pertain as much to how the synthetic grass is disposed of when it has been removed as they do to what happens underneath it while it is installed. Synthetic grass is made of man-made materials, many of which will not break down in landfill when it has been thrown away. Thought must be given to producing a product that has minimal impact on the environment, preferably by breaking down to an inert material. The use of recyclable natural materials will be a big issue in the future.
Health warnings about the infill and the lead levels in the grass fibers have been burning issues surrounding the synthetic grass industry. Studies and tests have been conducted to determine just how safe it is to use synthetic grass. Some of these studies are still ongoing although it appears that some of the concerns were largely unfounded. In many cases the infill that has been preferred for use in the new generation synthetic grasses steers clear of the crumb rubber that sparked the initial issue.
Any strong industry will feature a rapidly changing landscape that constantly finds ways to improve the products that are produced. The synthetic grass industry is exhibiting this speedy advancement.
