Choosing An Economical Oak Sideboard

Oak is almost the perfect wood for just about any room. It is hard, it can be finished to a beautiful sheen, and it can withstand kids and pets. An oak sideboard provides appeal and additional storage to entry ways, kitchens and dining rooms.

Depending on the size you might be interested in will depend on the cost. Large styles that resemble china cabinets have lots of storage, shelves, and probably some doors for internal storage. Sideboards that are made specifically for dining areas will usually have specially lined drawers in which to store silverware.

If budget is a concern, these can frequently be found at flea markets, second hand stores, and online. Occasionally the larger ones are put up for sale when families move to smaller homes and find they won’t have space for their large sideboard. Garage sales and estate sales are another place to look.

If you are looking for an entire dining room set that includes an oak sideboard, they can be found in may levels of quality. Some of the less expensive ones are not solid oak, they are pressed wood with oak veneers. They will resemble real oak, but over time you will see that these don’t hold up quite as well under heavy duty use. Wiping down a solid oak sideboard with a damp sponge won’t damage it, but doing this too frequently on an oak veneer could cause some warping over time, and dull the finish.

Oak goes with just about any decor. Formal and casual styles easily accommodate either matching pieces or eclectic styles when trying to design an entire room or area. You may also consider installing sliding closet doors for bedrooms to improve the look of your home.

Smaller sideboards can even be used in living rooms as what are referred to as sofa tables, tables which are typically placed in back of sofas and are used for either storage or just to add looks and style to a particular furniture grouping.
