If you have been performing research on tummy tuck surgery, you may have come across people talking about scarless surgery. Obviously, if you can undergo a tummy tuck and not have scarring, that would be ideal. However, that is not necessarily the reality of a scarless tummy tuck. To find out more, continue reading below.
First, you will often hear many surgeons describe a scarless tummy tuck as a mini tummy tuck (or mini abdominoplasty) or a partial tummy tuck (or partial abdominoplasty). This is because there is no such thing as a truly scarless tummy tuck.
Now, you may be wondering why someone would call this a scarless cosmetic surgery. Very simply, this procedure does not produce any visible scarring. The scarring is hidden in the patient’s bikini line.
The reality is that any form of a tummy tuck will result in scarring. The severity of the scarring will be determined by the type of tummy tuck performed, as well as how long the patient takes to heal.
As an example, if the surgery patient is a smoker, it can sometimes take between two to three times longer for the incision to heal. As a result of this longer healing time, the scarring tends to be noticeably more visible. Therefore, if you are a smoker and you want to minimize the severity of scarring, you may want to quit smoking before undergoing this surgery.
Also, the type of tummy tuck will influence the severity of scarring. You can expect less scarring with a mini tummy tuck than you could with an extended tummy tuck.
As we have demonstrated, there is unfortunately no such thing as a truly scarless tummy tuck. While a mini tummy tuck can limit the amount of visible scarring (by hiding it in the bikini line), it will still exist.
