Puppy pee pads are an extremely useful tool in training your new dog. They are a relatively inexpensive way to maintain household cleanliness. Using these pads the wrong way can result in frustration for you and your dog. Here are some tips for successful training.
You first goal should be to organize the puppies schedule for eating, resting, and pottying. Putting him on a regular schedule for eating and sleeping will determine when he needs to potty. Make sure he has a specific place to sleep, eat, and potty. All family members need to be aware of these basic things, which you are teaching your dog so that each person will be expecting the same of the dog. If each family member handles the dog in a different way he will become confused and training will become difficult or even impossible.
We will make use of the fact that a dog will not potty where he sleeps or eats so keep him confined to a relatively small area. Place the puppy pee pads in his area but not close to his bed or food bowls. His potty place needs to be isolated from his other normal activities. This will reinforce the concept of assigning different areas to different activities. At times when you cannot monitor your puppy be sure he is in his confined area with fresh puppy pee pads.
If you use a crate for his sleeping area do not place puppy pee pads in the crate. He will either chew them up or learn to potty in his crate. If you catch your puppy in a squatting position but not on the pad just pick him up and move him onto the pad. Always praise your pet for using the pad properly. Clean or remove the pad promptly and use a urine odor remover to clean any odor from the floor.
If you want to teach your dog to potty outside simply move the puppy pee pads progressively closer to the front door until you can take him outside. This will eventually result in him sitting by the door when he needs to go out.
