Master Cleanse to Lose Weight

February 9, 2010

A master cleansing diet consists of ten days or more where no solid food is consumed. Instead the body is cleansed by drinking a combination of freshly squeezed lemons, maple syrup, and cayenne pepper. Proponents claim that this doesn’t just result in weight loss, but also cleanses the body and removes cravings for alcohol, tobacco, coffee, and excessive eating.

Losing Weight
If you go on a master cleanse, you will certainly lose weight, since your intake of calories will be severely restricted. What’s more, some claim that the master cleanse have some properties in common with fat burners, mainly an ability to suppress appetite and remove the cravings for sweets.

What You Need to be Aware of
Being on a master cleanse for too long can be dangerous. You are not getting all the nutrients your body requires, so it should only be a temporary thing.

When going back to eating solid food, you need to be careful of how many calories you consume. There is a very real risk that you will gain back the weight you lost, so tread carefully.

Furthermore, when you lose weight by cleansing, some of the weight lost will be muscle, since you are not getting enough protein. If you go back and forth between cleansing putting on the weight again, you will actually reduce your muscle mass, and when you are at the same weight, you will be fatter. It follows that not gaining back the weight you lost, except if it is muscle mass by exercising, is paramount.

Detoxifying and Losing Weight
If you want to not only lose weight, but also cleanse your body, a master cleanse might be for you. It is, however, not the most efficient option if you are only looking to lose weight.

The cleanse grew in popularity after singer and actress Beyonce reportedly lost 20 pounds doing it, but even she said that there are other ways to lose weight, if you are not interested in the cleanse.
