Electrical power surges are the most notorious enemies of all electrical equipments. They can enter your home’s electrical system at literally the speed of light. However, there is a very simple way that you can protect electrical equipments in your home including your HDTV set.
One of the reasons why High Definition televisions can become damaged overnight without you knowing it is because of electrical power surges. Like all electrical devices, they can be affected by changes in voltage as long as they remain plugged to the power outlet. Finding a surge protector for your home theater is a very easy task that is most of the time overlooked. These devices are considerably cheap and can be found almost anywhere especially in stores that sell electrical equipment. You don’t have to spend a fortune on a very expensive product, mostly anyone will do the job.
To find a suitable device to protect your electrical devices you need to be aware of a very important thing. The product has to be able to handle the Watt load of all the devices that you will be connecting to it. To calculate the minimum amount of Watts that you need your surge protector to handle, just make a sum of all the Watts that the equipment you will be plugging consumes per hour. This is a very easy task. Look in the back of your HDTV television where the electrical requirements of the unit are listed and you will see something that looks like: 120 Hz AC 120w . In this case, 120w would be the power consumption of the television set. Do the same with all the devices that you are planning to plug in to the surge protector and add the numbers. This sum will represent the minimum amount of power load that your surge protector needs to be able to handle. Do not buy a unit that cannot handle your system’s load. As the device will turn it self off when it can’t handle the load.
