Fixing Common Laptop Screen Problems

Unfortunately, bad things happen to good laptops. Sometimes, the fate of a laptop is sealed with on low blow or high fall. You kicked yourself for not having it in your protective laptop case, but it is too late. Other times, the problem is less severe. Your laptop is not doomed, but you need to figure out a way to fix it. Some laptop screen fixes can be done by an amateur computer nerd, while others will need the help of a professional.

Sometimes problems with a laptop screen are so easy to fix, you could kick yourself. Other times, you’ll need to get to a repair shop. Sometimes the screen won’t turn on with the laptop. The easy fix is if the laptop settings are set up so that it is projecting onto an external monitor. Simply change the settings. To change the settings, on my laptop, I press Fn+F6. The Fn button is in the lower left corner of the laptop keyboard. You might have a different number between F1 and F12 that has this setting. It will have an image of a bright monitor, an arrow, than an image of a dark monitor. Hitting these two keys together will change the setting back to your monitor. What if that didn’t work? Set up an external monitor to see if the screen is projected there when you change the settings back. If the screen is projected onto the other monitor, then the problem is with the screen. You may need to get the screen replaced.

Sometimes the laptop screen will come on, but it is very dim. Again, it may just be that the settings are by default set to dim. You may just need to brighten the screen. To do this, press Fn and the bright screen button, which is the right arrow on my laptop. There is a bright screen button and a dim screen button, and they both look like the sun, so try them both to see if that fixes it. If this doesn’t work, then there is a problem with the light that lights up the laptop. This will need to be replaced. If you got your cheap laptop for under $300, you will need to weight the cost of a repair with the cost of a replacement.
