Is it wise to mate a litter of German Shepherd dogs with Staffordshire Bull terriers?
Buster, the companion of Roy Hattersley, MP., former deputy leader of Britain’s Labour Party, was one such cross. Buster achieved international fame when he killed a goose in 1996 in St. James’ Park, London. What made the situation particularly embarrassing for the politician was the fact that this was a Royal Park, making its geese the property of the Queen. Red faces all round.
Buster subsequently became even more famous on the publication of his books: Buster’s Diaries. Shortly after the park incident, in an ironic twist of fate, Mr. Hattersley was able to empathise with a member of the Royal Family who was herself in trouble because of a dog. Much to her embarrassment, one of Princess Anne’s dogs attacked a woman in Windsor. More red faces.
Cats are less likely to attack random passers-by. So on the question of cats vs dogs, cats are generally considered the safer pet.
But what do you get your animal for Christmas or his birthday? For a dog, how about a four-poster bed to rest his weary body after all those long walks? Or for a cat, some fine china dishes and a few lead crystal bowls for her and drink?
All kinds of dog accessories are appearing in pet shops and upmarket department stores internationally. Pet owners can choose from a selection of balls, Kongs, squeaky toys, tug-of-war ropes, teddy bears and a vast range of edible and chewie delights.
Dog collars are going upmarket too… some have personalised side-release buckles, others are odourless (for people who don’t go a bundle on the Eau de Chien range of perfumes) and some really zany T-shirts for your English Bull Terrier to wear when the weather turns cold.
New this year – for the pooch who piddles in his bed – is a choice of water-resistant bed linen and some deliciously soft bolsters.
