A certain amount of hair loss in both men and women is hereditary and not preventable. But how you treat your locks can go a long way in preventing hair loss due to mistreatment.
Minimize the amount and kinds of chemical treatments that you use on your hair such as hair coloring, and keep concentrated heat such as hair dryers and curling irons to a minimum in order to prevent hair damage and loss. If you insist on coloring that gray, space your dye treatments at least two months apart to give the hair a chance to rest between chemical exposures. Or, you can let your hair go gray naturally and feel good about having gray hair rather than no hair at all.
Poor nutrition can cause hair loss by making the hair break off more easily and even fall out. Getting adequate calcium in your daily diet is healthy for hair, including such dairy items as yogurt, cheese and milk, along with other calcium-rich food items such as broccoli, salmon, peas, white beans, collard greens, spinach, bok choy and almonds. Diets rich in protein, including eggs, chicken and seafood, is another proven preventative measure to avoiding early hair loss.
Avoid constantly pulling the hair back into a ponytail or stretching the hair tightly in a braid in order to prevent unwanted hair loss. Use hair ties and barettes that are coated so as not to stretch or pull the hair.
Research has shown that people who have irregular sleeping patterns and who chronically don’t get at least eight hours of restful sleep every night tend to suffer hair loss. Pick a regular sleeping pattern and stick to it, even on weekends.
Use a shampoo and grooming product that is appropriate for your style of hair in order to add the appropriate amount of moisture and nutrition that will prevent hair loss and hair breakage. Using your fingertips and light pressure, give yourself a scalp massage when your hair is dry, for a few minutes every day to stimulate circulation and avoid hair loss.
If you notice hair loss beginning after starting a round of medication, ask your physician because certain medications cause hair loss as a side effect.
Although hair loss is an embarrassing situation, there are many treatments and precautions that can be used in order to prevent more hair loss, and even to stimulate new hair growth. Find the treatments that work best for you, and you can begin to feel confident again.
