Do you like taking time each day to relax and calm yourself down from stressors? Chances are that if you are a person that does yoga, meditation, or mental relaxation, then you know exactly what it feels like to have active alpha brain waves. This is a pattern that takes over our brains when they do not need to worry about things that are going on in our environment. Although while we are in this mental state our focus is inward, we still are able to positively interact with our external world and people in a very calm manner. People that have anger problems, anxiety, and stress are not in the alpha state.
If you know anything about brain wave patterns, then you should know that even though alpha is not the slowest pattern, it is usually the only slow wave that people have in their stream of consciousness while they are awake. It can be difficult to cope with a lack of alpha activity if you do not currently have much. Some unhealthy ways that people use to boost their alpha are: smoking marijuana and drinking alcohol. The best way to boost your alpha is to overcome your fears through conscious effort. As soon as you get comfortable in any environment, you are going to become less fearful and your beta waves will decline.
Other more therapeutic methods of increasing alpha activity are: deep breathing, proper meditation practices, certain types of yoga, hypnotherapy, and acupuncture. Although not all of these methods are going to work good for everyone, you can try them out to see what works best for you. The way that you will know when you have accessed the alpha state is when your full body feels calm, and your thoughts quiet down. Basically, there should be nothing that bothers you while you are in this state of mind.
